How to personalize a template

  1. Mention one specific thing: a post they wrote, news about their company or something you have in common.
  2. Say what is in it for them in one sentence. Leave out your company history.
  3. Ask for one small thing, like a reply, a resource or a short call.
  4. Give them an easy way to decline, and follow up once at most if they do not answer.

Common mistakes

  • Pitching before you have shown you know who they are.
  • Asking for a 30-minute call in the very first message.
  • Sending the same text to everyone at one company.
  • Following up again and again after silence.

Frequently asked questions

What is a LinkedIn cold message?

A message to someone you do not know yet, such as a potential client, partner or candidate. It can be a direct message after you connect, or an InMail.

InMail or a direct message: which should I use?

A direct message only goes to people you are connected with. InMail reaches people outside your network and usually uses credits from a paid plan.

How long should a cold message be?

A few sentences that fit on a phone screen. That is enough to say why you are writing and what you are asking for.

Does this page send messages or store what I type?

Neither. You copy the message and send it yourself, and the details you enter stay in your browser and are never sent to us.
