LinkedIn Character Counter
Paste your text, choose the field you are writing for, and see how many characters you have left. The counter counts the way LinkedIn does, emoji and styled letters included, and also shows words, lines and reading time.

What counts as one character
| Text | Looks like | Counts as |
|---|---|---|
| Plain word | 8 characters | |
| Bold word | 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱𝗜𝗻 | 8 characters, one per styled letter |
| Emoji | ✅ | 1 character |
| Line break | An empty line between paragraphs | 1 character per break |
| Underlined word | L̲i̲n̲k̲ | 8 characters, letter plus mark |
Say it all, then cut a third
Write the full version first. Then cut roughly a third: filler words, points you made twice, the long warm-up before you get to it. Most drafts get clearer and fit the limit in the same pass.
Tips that work
- Do check the length before you paste, not after LinkedIn stops you typing.
- Do keep your first line short so it reads well in the feed.
- Do use a short list when you need to say a lot in little space.
- Don't pad a post just to make it longer; shorter often reads better.
- Don't forget that spaces and line breaks count too.
- Don't trust a count from a word processor; many count emoji and styled letters differently.
The limits at a glance
Posts can run to 3,000 characters. The About section allows 2,600, comments 1,250 and headlines 220. A connection note is capped at 300, and some free accounts may see a shorter limit there. Poll questions allow 140 characters and each poll option 30.
These numbers live in one place on our site, so every tool uses the same values. When you write in another app and paste into LinkedIn, it is easy to go over and lose the last lines, which is often your call to action. Counting first saves you that rework.
What we tested
We ran a handful of tricky strings through the counting function this page uses. Bold "LinkedIn" came out as 8 characters, even though the raw JavaScript string length is 16. Underlined "Link" counted as 8: four letters, each with its underline mark. A single check mark emoji counted as 1.
Combined emoji are where counters disagree. A US flag counted as 2, a thumbs up with a skin tone as 2, and a family emoji made of three people as 5. So if you are right at the limit, a few compound emoji can push you over. Plain emoji like ✅ or 👉 are safe.
Words, lines and reading time
Words are counted by spaces and line breaks. Reading time divides the word count by 238 words per minute and rounds to the nearest whole minute, with one minute as the minimum. The first-line count is there to help you keep your hook short enough to land before "see more".
Cutting without losing the point
Put the main point first. In posts, people decide in the first lines whether to expand, so your most important sentence should come early. In a headline the first words matter most for the same reason.
Edit for density as well as length. Swap phrases for single words, drop "really" and "very", and turn a run of steps into a list. If it still does not fit, move the detail somewhere else: a comment under your post, your About section or a document post.
Frequently asked questions
What is the character limit for a LinkedIn post?
Up to 3,000 characters. Pick "Post" in the counter to check your draft against it.
How long can a LinkedIn headline and About section be?
A headline can be up to 220 characters and the About section up to 2,600.
Do emoji count as one character?
Most emoji count as one character in this counter. A few combined emoji, such as flags and family emoji, are made of several characters.
Do spaces and line breaks count?
Yes. Every space and every line break counts toward the limit.
Is my text saved?
No. The counter runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent or stored.
Why does my count differ from another tool?
Some tools count styled letters or emoji as two characters because of how they are stored. This counter counts what you see, one per character.
What is the limit for a LinkedIn comment?
1,250 characters. Most good comments use a small fraction of that.
